Kippe (Gottesauer Straße 23, Karlsruhe, Germany)

As the name implies, Die Kippe is kind of a dump, or a dive bar, or
whatever kind of word you might choose to describe establishments that
are lacking in looks but soaked in spirit.

The interior is cluttered but welcoming, with placards and signs
advertising beverages and businesses taking up all the free space on
the wall. The worn look communicates a homely feeling, in spite of its
dinginess.

Breakfast choices includes muesli, eggs, sausages, cheeses, fruits,
breads, and jams in a variety of assortments, including meat-heavy
meals, vegetarian choices or the option of side dishes.

Those hungry later in the day can choose from traditional German
meals, like meatloaf or dumplings, käsespätzle or potato pancakes with
applesauce, sausage salad or just regular salad. Side dishes include
comfort foods like bread and fried potatoes.

There is also a rotating menu with daily specials. Aside from classic
German offerings, there are meals which will please other ethnic
palates. Choose from Italian (spaghetti), Thai (curry, jasmine rice),
or British (fish sticks, Shepherd’s Pie) as entrees.

The drink menu offers a selection of 22 beers on tap or in the bottle,
such as an Astra Urtyp or a Rotlich, both of which are only 2,50 Euro
each. Whiskey abounds at Kippe with 12 different choices, and those
who prefer not to have a whiskey with a beer back can choose from an
assortment of other hard alcohols, or take a look at the menu of
sodas, juices, coffees and teas.

The bar also offers activity and drink specials on select days.
Mondays feature a pub quiz, Tuesdays have board games and Wednesdays
play host to Bingo, while nights in the fall sometimes have live
musicians. As for drink bargains, on certain dazs, select beers at
1,90 Euro each from 5 p.m. on: Tuesday is Heineken, Wednesday is
Zäpfle, Thursday is Jever and Sunday is Abadu.

Gaststätte Kippe is located at Gottesauerstr. 23, which is in between
the Gottesauer Platz and Durlacher Tor S-Bahn stations. It’s also a
leisurely stroll from the bar Karlsruher Altstadt.

Die Kippe opens every morning at 8 a.m., with a closing time of 1 a.m.
on week days and 2 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and evenings before
public holidays. It also is home to a beer garden which is open daily
until 11 p.m. or midnight.
