Das Gift (Donaustrasse 119, Berlin, Germany)
Das Gift is a corner bar situated in North Neukölln. Once a small dive bar, it may not have received much of a makeover since its older days, but it’s definitely a bit more hipster-friendly. Owned by Barry Burnes of Mogwai fame and his wife Rachel, along with co-owners Sinisa Mitrovic and Phil Collins (no, not that Phil Collins), all four of whom circulate in the art and music scene, it is doing a good job of reinventing its location. It may still be a dive bar, but its primary demographic has shifted to cater toward a more alternative scene.
Yet in spite of its changed target demographic, some things from the old business still figure. The tree that the prior owner planted in the middle of the room still stands, although the Das Gift reincarnation features two stuffed birds and some additional neon lights. A brand new soundsystem is also central, which means the bar is nothing short of loud, just as a rock’n’roll bar should be.
Naturally, Das Gift also channels a Scottish atmosphere. More specifically, it has a bit of a Glasgow-based feel, serving as homage to the hometown of its owners. Visitors can enjoy an Augustiner Helles for 2,80 Euro or a Zirndorfer for 3 Euro, but German beers are only a
small necessity among the offerings. Therefore, don’t be surprised to discover a handful of Scottish ales and whiskeys available.
Das Gift is located at Donaustr. 119, a short walk from the Rathaus Neukölln stop on U-Bahn line 7. It is in the same neighborhood as Cinnamon Tree and Silberlöffel, although both bars are a healthy walk away. Das Gift opens daily at 8 p.m. The bar closes on Sunday through Thursday nights at 2 a.m. and is open end on Friday and Saturday.
