Currybar (City Palais /Königstr. 39, Duisburg, Germany)

With a name like Currybar, this restaurant and imbiss stand in Duisburg specializes in none other than currywurst. The cornerstone item comes in two varieties as well: regular and vegetarian. The latter option is made from tofu, and both include mayonnaise, cabbage-based salad and fries. Sit-down diners can also order steaks, with an Argentinean-style rump steak topping off the menu at 13,90 Euros.

Those looking for a bite on-the-go can choose from the imbiss menu, which offers six different flavors and sizes of currywurst, bratwurst, chicken nuggets and more. A special section of the menu is also devoted to fries – Dutch-style. These come in different cuts and with different types of sauces, including ketchup, mayonnaise, curry, wasabi, tzaziki and sour cream.

Drinks range from specialty coffees to juices, soft drinks, and items like Red Bull and Bionade. Although not as extensive as a full bar menu, the alcohol selection is also quite impressive for a “fast food joint.” Nearly a dozen kinds of beer are available on tap or in the bottle, and there are a couple of wine options. But what better next your currywurst than a cold Carlsberg ?

The kitchen is open until 11 p.m. on weeknights, and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Currybar also offers catering for parties and events, and is a great gathering place on game nights, as it shows sports on the TV.

Currybar can be found at Königstraße 39, a short walk away from the U-Bahn Stop at König-Heinrich-Platz. It is within the Duisburg CityPalais, a giant plaza which features shopping, a performance hall and even a casino. Nearby bars include Rick’s and Moulin Maultaschen.
